13 Sentinels Aegis Rim: Aegis Rim is a cross-genre video game developed by Vanillaware and released by Atlus for PlayStation 4. It was released in Japan in November 2019 and is scheduled to be released globally in September 2020.
The game is divided into adventurous side-scrolling subdivisions and real-time strategy battles and follows a fictional 1980s Japanese 13 high school students who are involved in a futuristic war between mecha and hostile monsters. The game was originally scheduled to be released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2018, but due to the cancellation of the Vita version, the game was postponed to 2019.
Director and writer George Kamitani believes that this game ran counter to the studio’s traditional fantasy video game after the completion of “Dragon Crest” and initially put it in the toy field. Two years later, 13 Sentinels began production, discarding the toy production line elements of Atlus.
Since the scope of the game is larger compared to previous games, the studio has to deal with various workloads and development challenges, so for Vanillaware, production proved to be challenging. Contrary to previous works, Kamitani not only worked alone in script creation, but also delegated the role design responsibilities to Yukiko Hirai and Emika Kida. Sakimoto Hitoshi, who handled music for Vanillaware’s past games, and his studio Basiscape revisited their roles.
