Amazing Facts About Dinant (Belgium) – Dinant is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Namur, Belgium. It is located on the Meuse River in the Ardennes, 90 kilometers (56 miles) southeast of Brussels, 30 kilometers (19 miles) southeast of Charleroi, and 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Namur. Dinant is located 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the French border.
The municipalities include the old communes of Anseremme, Bouvignes-sur-Meuse, Dréhance, Falmagne, Falmignoul, Foy-Notre-Dame, Furfooz, Lisogne, Sorinnes, and Thynes.
Dinan is located in the upper valley of the Meuse River, where the river penetrates into the western part of the Condroz plateau. It is located in a steep valley, between the rock wall and the river. The original settlement had little space to grow away from the river, so it expanded into a slender town on the north-south axis along the river bank.
In the 19th century, when a branch of the Meuse was filled, the former Île des Batteurs (Drummer Island) in the south was directly attached to the town.
Dinant benefited greatly from the agricultural opportunities offered by the fertile land on the plateau overlooking it. In the town, brass production is a traditional craft that benefits from a vast river. At this point, a navigable river facilitates the easy transportation of raw materials and the rapid distribution of finished products from artisan workshops.
