Amazing Facts About Korcula (Croatia) – Korcula is an island in the Adriatic Sea in Croatia. It has an area of 279 square kilometers (108 square miles); it is 46.8 kilometers (29.1 miles) long and 7.8 kilometers (4.8 miles) wide on average-it is located off the coast of Dalmatia. Its 15,522 inhabitants (2011) make it the second most populous Adriatic island after Krk, and the most populous Croatian island, which is not connected to the mainland by a bridge. The population is almost exclusively Croats (95.74%). The island is twin brothers with Rothesay in Scotland.
Korcula is part of the central Dalmatian archipelago and is separated from the Peljesac Peninsula by a narrow Peljesac Strait with a width of 900 to 3,000 meters (3,000 to 9,800 feet). It stretches from east to west and has a total length of 47 kilometers (29 miles); on average, it is 8 kilometers (5.0 miles) wide. With an area of 279 square kilometers (108 square miles), it is the sixth-largest island in the Adriatic Sea. The highest peaks are Klupca at 568 meters (1,864 feet) and Kom at 510 meters (1,670 feet).
The main settlements on the island are the towns of Korcula, Vela Luka, and Brato. The coastal villages are Brna, Lumbarda, Račišće, and Prižba; Žrnovo, Pupnat, Smokvica, and Čara are located inland. The island is divided into the cities of Korcula, Smokvica, Blato, and Lumbarda. The climate is the Mediterranean; the average temperature in January is 9.8 °C (49.6 °F), the average temperature in July is 26.9 °C (80.4 °F); the average annual rainfall is 1,100 mm (43.3 inches). The island is mainly covered with Mediterranean flora, including extensive pine forests.
The main road runs along the spine of the island and connects all settlements from Lumbarda in the east to Vela Luka in the west, with the exception of Račišće, which is served by a separate road running along the northern coast. A ferry connects the city of Korcula with Orebic on the Pelješac Peninsula. Another line connects Vela Luka with the islands of Split and Lastovo. Fast passenger catamarans connect these two ports with Split and the islands of Hvar and Lastovo.
