Amazing Facts About Salzburg (Austria) – Salzburg is the capital of the state of Salzburg and the fourth largest city in Austria. The population in 2020 is 156,872 people.
The town is located on the site of the former Roman settlement of Iuvavum. Salzburg was established as a cathedral in 696 and became the seat of the archbishop in 798. Its main source of income is salt mining and trade, and sometimes gold mining. The Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, with a history dating back to the 11th century. In the 17th century, Salzburg became the center of the counter-reformation, where monasteries and numerous Baroque churches were built.
As a result, Salzburg’s historic center (German: Altstadt) is known for its Baroque architecture and is one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps, with 27 churches. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The city has three universities and a large number of students.
Visitors can also travel to Salzburg to explore the historic center and scenic Alpine environment. Salzburg is the birthplace of the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the 18th century. Due to its history, culture, and attractions, Salzburg is known as Austria’s “most inspiring city”.
