The town is located on the site of the former Roman settlement of Iuvavum. Salzburg was established as a cathedral in 696 and became the seat of the archbishop in 798. Its main source of income is salt mining and trade, and sometimes gold mining. The Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, with a history dating back to the 11th century. In the 17th century, Salzburg became the center of the counter-reformation, where monasteries and numerous Baroque churches were built.
