It is located in the northwest of the country, along the Sava River, on the southern slope of Medvednica Mountain. Zagreb is located at an altitude of approximately 122 m (400 ft) above sea level. The estimated population of the city in 2018 was 804,507. The population of the Zagreb urban agglomeration is 1,153,255, which is about a quarter of the total population of Croatia.
Zagreb is a city with a long history, dating back to Roman times. The oldest settlement near the city is Roman Andautonia, located in what is today Ščitarjevo. The name “Zagreb” was recorded in 1134 and refers to the establishment of the settlement of the Captor in 1094. Zagreb became a free royal city in 1242. In 1851, Zagreb had its first mayor, Janko Kamuf.
Zagreb has a special status as an administrative division of Croatia. It is a combined city and county (but separate from Zagreb County), administratively subdivided into 17 municipal districts. Most of them are located in low-elevation areas along the Sava Valley, while the northern and northeastern urban areas such as Podsljeme and Sesvete are located at the foot of the Medvednica mountain, making the geographic image of the city more diverse. The city stretches about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from east to west and about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from north to south.
Zagreb has been rated as a Beta-level global city by the Globalization and World Urban Research Network.
