Persona 5 Royal is a role-playing video game developed by Atlus. This is the sixth work in the “Persona” series and it is part of the larger Goddess Reincarnation franchise. The game was released on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan in September 2016, and released globally in April 2017. It is distributed by Atlus in Japan and North America and Deep Silver in Europe and Australia. The expanded version of Persona 5 Royal with new content was released in Japan in October 2019, and released globally in March 2020.
Persona 5 takes place in today’s Tokyo, followed by a high school student named Joker, who was charged with assault and transferred to a new school after probation. In the course of a school year, he and other students awakened a special power and became a group of secret guards called “ghost thieves”. They explore the “Metaverse”, which is a supernatural realm born in the human subconscious, aimed at stealing malice from the hearts of adults.
As with previous games in the series, the party uses its psychological and physical manifestations (called “characters”) to fight enemies known as “shadows”. The game combines role-playing and dungeon crawling elements and social simulation scenarios.
Persona 5 is developed by P-Studio, which is Atlus’ internal development studio, led by game director and producer Katsura Hashino. Along with Hashino, the staff returning from earlier Persona games included character designer Shigenori Soejima and music composer Meguro Shoji. Preparatory work began during the development of Persona 4, and comprehensive development began after the release of Catherine in 2011.
Persona 5 was first released in 2013. Since the game has not yet been fully completed, its original release date for the second half of 2014 has been postponed. The theme of the game revolves around freedom from the limitations of modern society, and its story is strongly inspired by grotesque novels. The party’s “Characters” is based on mobs and literary rebels.
Persona 5 has received unanimous praise for its visual performance, art direction, gameplay, story and music. The game is considered one of the greatest role-playing games of all time, and has received nominations and multiple awards. By December 2019, the game had sold more than 3 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling game in the overall series of “Goddess Tensei”.

Other related media have also been released, including two spin-off games, “Persona 5: Dancing in the Stars” and “Persona 5 Scramble”, as well as adaptations of manga and anime. The cast of the game has also appeared in other games, such as Joker playing a playable role in the 2018 cross-border fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Although the upcoming New Goddess Tensei V and Nocturne HD in 2021 have attracted the attention of players, another ATLUS series continues to attract our hearts: Persona. With the western release of “Persona 5 Royal” and the release of the PC port of “Persona 4 Golden”, there are already many JRPG advantages. Although these games have always been very special, PS4’s “Persona 5 Royal” now has a greater weight.
In the current COVID-19 pandemic, students all over the world are restricted. They are forced to take classes online and cannot really connect with those around them. The remote class robbed students of contact. Long-distance classes make students lose the essential non-academic knowledge of the school. When all the work a person does at school is to click join on the “zoom” link, it is impossible to build relationships, explore new places, have new experiences and grow as a person. This is an isolated experience. However, there is a way to fill the gap in the home: Persona 5 Royal.
Persona 5 Royal is a complicated Japanese RPG. On the surface, it is a fascinating life simulator. The protagonist and core role of the game is a part-time Phantom Thief, yes. However, they are still full-time high school students in modern Tokyo Japan. Considering that Persona 5 Royal works on the in-game calendar system, you can play every day of the character in it, so entering Shujin Academy is a vital part of the game. However, when you sit in class to answer occasional questions, the top priority of life simulation games is the high school experience around the classroom.
As far as the character experience is concerned, chatting with friends, participating in part-time jobs, and visiting Tokyo can all bring fantastic elements to the game. In the pre-COVID world, daily activities such as hanging out with friends or working as a convenience store in a game are definitely milk bread in a vacuum. The reason for the fun of the game is because of how the patchwork of these elements succeeds in the Metaverse-more items, stronger characters, etc. This is a tempting dynamic that makes every aspect of the game loop important. However, this is no longer the world before COVID.
Although it may seem exaggerated, today’s excitement (to a certain extent) is an inherent characteristic that simply exists in the world. Infiltrating palaces and stealing hearts in the eclectic world of Persona is still an unforgettable experience. The game’s commitment to style and aesthetics makes it one of the loudest and most confident games on the market. But today, it’s hard not to marvel at the most subtle and unintentional things, such as subway trains safely filling up standing rooms without any hesitation.
In this sense, “Persona 5 Royal” is fascinated in a new way. It makes a quarter of the wish come true: to return to a world that is not so unfamiliar. Just stroll around the subway station or visit the streets of Shibuya, you can be unique. Although you can go straight through all the lively residents of Japan (perhaps the residual limitations brought about by the roots of the game PS3), the world is still full of vitality. It is talking to people and crawling about things to do.
It provides an ideal framework for students who are doing distance learning in the real world. The morning trip from Leblanc Cafe to Shujin Academy offers an adventure that is simply lost by rolling off the bed and jumping into the online classroom equipment. The school’s campus provides the friendship that was lost when the home was quarantined.
The few hours after class give people an unconstrained sense of autonomy. Maybe you will go to the city with Ryuji, or go to the cafe with Ann. Maybe you will come back to Sojiro’s to make coffee for customers. Or, you will do odd jobs, earn some yen, and then go shopping. Such choices will only begin to touch the surface of the game’s social content.
No game can replace actually entering the world and knowing what it feels like. This is a vital part of life. However, it is not known to everyone now. Therefore, we must turn to the escapist power of video games to find ways to express our desires. There is no better way out than “Persona 5 Royal”. With its impeccable writing, sound social system and comprehensive polishing, getting lost in Tokyo is as magical as ever. However, today, our real conditions make this magic more powerful. Persona 5 Royal is indeed the game students need now.
“Persona 5 Royal” released in Japan is “Persona 5: Royal”, an enhanced version of the PlayStation 4 game, similar to the previous “Persona 4 Gold”. This version adds a phantom thief member named “Kasumi Yoshizawa”, a new palace, new music, other plot and social elements, a playable third semester, as well as support for PlayStation 4 Pro and many other changes and additions. Atlus first mocked Games such as Persona 5 R in December 2018, and it was fully announced in April 2019.
The game was released in Japan on October 31, 2019, and was released globally on March 31, 2020. Like the original game, Domerica co-produces animated cutscenes with others.
