13 Sentinels Aegis Rim 2020 is a cross-genre video game developed by Vanillaware and released by Atlus for PlayStation 4. It was released in Japan in November 2019 and is scheduled to be released globally in September 2020.
The game is divided into adventurous side-scrolling subdivisions and real-time strategy battles and follows a fictional 1980s Japanese 13 high school students who are involved in a futuristic war between mecha and hostile monsters. The game was originally scheduled to be released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2018, but due to the cancellation of the Vita version, the game was postponed to 2019.
Director and writer George Kamitani believes that this game ran counter to the studio’s traditional fantasy video game after the completion of “Dragon’s Crown” and initially put it in the toy field. Two years later, 13 Sentinels began production, discarding the toy production line elements of Atlus.
Since the scope of the game is larger compared to previous games, the studio has to deal with various workloads and development challenges, so for Vanillaware, the production proved to be challenging. Contrary to previous works, Kamitani not only worked alone in script creation but also delegated the role design responsibilities to Yukiko Hirai and Emika Kida. Hitoshi Sakimoto who handled the music for Vanillaware’s past games, and his studio Basiscape revisited their roles.
The game was originally scheduled to be released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2018, but due to the cancellation of the Vita version, the game was postponed to 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the localization of Atlus West proved to be challenging. After its release in Japan, its sales started slowly and eventually exceeded Atlus’ expectations, continuing to sell 300,000 copies worldwide. It has received rave reviews, and its narrative and artistic design have been well received, although some critics believe that RTS clips are the weakest part of the game.

In the “memory” segment, players explore two-dimensional (2D) side-scrolling environments and interact with elements of these environments in a non-linear manner. Regardless of the player’s actions, several elements move in real time, and choices can be made to change the outcome of certain scenes. The keywords spoken by the characters and the keywords of the obtained items will be added to the Thought Cloud database, which can be accessed to trigger internal monologues and initiate new conversations.
Once learned, the keywords will be brought into other early or parallel scenes, which will unlock more story routes and options. Character stories are tracked through flowcharts, and players can jump between scenes to try different keywords in the “thought cloud”. If a wrong choice is made in an area, the game will rewind to the beginning of the day so that the player can choose the correct choice. In order to reach this point faster, events that the player has seen can be quickly forwarded.
The battle system in the destruction mode takes the form of a real-time strategic scenario, with up to six selected characters using sentries to fight against the enemy called Kaiju Guard Terminal. The operation of the terminal depends on which units are installed. If all units are defeated, the hub will be overwhelmed and the game will end. You can pause the game, allow the sentry to move and perform actions such as combat and support capabilities.
When the hub successfully resists all waves, this part is complete. Combat enables sentries to fight Kaijuu with different strengths and abilities (for example, flying or additional defense), which requires one of four types of outposts; some sentries have strong resistance to flying enemies, while others are against large ground The troops performed better. Their attack range and movement speed are also different. The sentry has at least one basic attack, which does not consume any cost, and the other ability consumes a resource called EP. EP can be restored through defense.
After the action, each Sentinel has a cooldown timer before it can act again. The damage can be repaired by Sentinel pilots, but this requires leaving the Sentinel and making them vulnerable to attack. The player can also trigger limited-use “terminal commands”, special functions within the scope, such as the EMP that uses up a dedicated energy meter. Characters can be upgraded based on experience points and receive passive reward effects, while the abilities and attributes of outposts can be improved by using meta chips obtained in battle.
The analysis takes the form of an index, which stores event scenes and information about people, projects, and concepts. The mysterious points obtained through the destruction mode are used to unlock new index entries in Analysis. As the player progresses, the character narrative will be locked until something else happens in another part of the game. These unlock conditions can include unlocking items in Analysis, advancing the story in Remembrance, or solving specific battles in Destruction.
