Bugsnax is an upcoming adventure video game developed by the independent game studio Young Horses. In the game, the player explores a mysterious island and tries to find and capture the half-bug and half-snack creature of the same name. The game was unveiled through the announcement trailer displayed at the Sony PlayStation 5 live streaming unveiling event on June 11, 2020. British indie pop band Kero Kero Bonito performed the game’s theme song, which has appeared in the announcement trailer. The game is currently scheduled to be released on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows PC in the fourth quarter of 2020.
The player controls a newspaper reporter. One day, he received a film tape from an email from the little-known explorer Elizabert Megafig. Megafig gave a detailed introduction to the mysterious Snaktooth island, which is inhabited by creatures called Bugsnax, which are “half insects and half snacks”, and encouraged reporters to come to the island and record for the world to visit. An interested reporter walked into the island, only to find Megafig missing from the local gang.
Bugsnax is a first-person adventure game in which players try to use various devices to find and capture different kinds of Bugsnax on the rampant Snaktooth island. More than 100 Bugsnak species are available for capture. After the capture, Bugsnax can be fed to local dieters, who change their bodies according to the characteristics of the Bugsnak eaten.
Young Horses spent about six years developing the game to “not be exhausted” and “figure out what the game is.” The original idea was that Kevin Zuhn, the company’s creative director, drew a “waffle” sketch of a caterpillar made of waffles. Initially, the design of the game was inspired by “PokémonSnap”, but as time passed, the game gradually evolved into “a weird fusion of all these different game concepts.” In addition to “PokémonSnap”, the final game also changed from “Ape Escape”, ” Dark Cloud and Viva Piñata.
The game was made public for the first time through an announcement trailer at Sony’s Future Revealed PlayStation 5 event on June 11, 2020. The trailer features the game’s theme song “It’s Bugsnax!”, sung by the British independent pop band Kero Kero Bonito. The song itself is very popular. GamesRadar called it “the favorite memetic ingredient on the Internet” and wrote: “Even if you haven’t heard of the game Bugsnax, you have probably heard of the game Bugsnax. Up. Theme song.”
