A characteristic version of the Broadway musical. After inheriting his grandmother’s property, the cellar owner has a different feeling about closing the store and retiring to the Dominican Republic.

On November 7, 2008, Universal Pictures announced that they plan to adapt the original musical into a feature film for release in 2011. Kenny Ortega directed the film, which was originally scheduled to start shooting in the summer of 2011. The movie was cancelled in March 2011. In January 2012, Lin-Manuel Miranda stated that the film adaptation was being re-discussed. In May 2016, it was announced that Miranda would co-produce the film with Harvey Weinstein, with the support of The Weinstein Company. On June 10, 2016, Jon M. Chu took office and directed the film adaptation of the musical.

After numerous allegations of sexual misconduct against Weinstein, his reputation as a producer in the film was deleted, and the film’s copyright was finally auctioned to Warner Bros. for $50 million. In October 2018, Anthony Ramos assumed an undisclosed role, which was later revealed to be the leader of Usnavi. According to reports, on November 5, 2018, Rita Moreno had begun a dialogue with the film studio to star in the film, but shortly afterward, this proved to be incorrect.

In January 2019, Corey Hawkins played Benny. In April 2019, actors Jimmy Smits, Melissa Barrera, Leslie Grace, Olga Merediz, Gregory Diaz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Stephanie Beatriz, and Dascha Polanco starred. In June 2019, Marc Anthony and Lin-Manuel Miranda joined the cast. Filming began in New York on June 3, 2019.
