Irul 2021 (translated as “Darkness”) is an Indian Malayalam mystery crime thriller film directed by Naseef Yusuf Izuddin and its directorial debut. The film was co-produced by Anto Joseph Films and Plan J Studios, which starred Fahadh Faasil, Soubin Shahir, and Darshana Rajendran. The film was released on the streaming platform Netflix on April 2, 2021.
Writer and businessman Alex Parayil and his girlfriend Archana Pillai plan to take a weekend off without a mobile phone, and Alex promised to give Archana a surprise. On the way, their car broke down in the rain, and the couple tried to hide in a nearby house. In the house, the owner of the house took them away. They told them that the telephone line was unable to work due to the storm and allowed them to stay overnight.
The three began to talk about the fact that this weird homeowner criticized Alex’s book “Irul” based on a real serial killer as being inaccurate and imaginative, rather than relying on the real facts and information. During the conversation, the power to the house was cut off, and Alex and the owner tried to find the main switch in the basement. Naseef Yusuf Izuddin worked as an assistant director in Bollywood movies such as “Kai Po Che!”, “Happy New Year”, Raees, Newton, and Tumbbad. In September 2020, Naseef announced his directorial debut, with Fahadh Faasil, Soubin Shahir, and Darshana Rajendran. Together as directors at Plan J Studios, the film’s early producer Thanneer Mathan Dinangal and Anto Joseph Film Company (Anto Joseph Film Company) co-funded the film.
