Minamata is a 2020 drama film directed by Andrew Levitas, adapted from the book of the same name by Aileen Mioko Smith and Eugene Smith. Movie star Johnny Depp (also a producer) plays Smith, an American photographer who documented the impact of mercury poisoning on the citizens of Minamata, Kumamoto, Japan.
The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 21, 2020. The film is scheduled to be released by Vertigo Releasing in the UK on February 12, 2021. It received different reviews from critics.

War photographer W. Eugene Smith returned to Japan to document the devastating consequences of mercury poisoning in coastal communities-water am disease.
On October 23, 2018, it was announced that Johnny Depp will star in a TV movie, taking the role of photojournalist Eugene Smith, the film will be directed by Andrew Levitas And directed. Filming began in January 2019, with actors Bill Nighy, Minami Hinase, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Rase Kase and Jun Kunimura joining the cast. Filming took place in Japan, Serbia and Montenegro.

It will premiere globally at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 21, 2020. In October 2020, “Vertigo Released” won the distribution rights for the film in the UK and is scheduled to be released on February 12, 2021.
