The Dig 2021

In 1939, Suffolk’s landlord Edith Pretty hired a local self-taught archaeologist-excavator Basil Brown to deal with her in Woodbridge ( A large tomb in a country estate in Sutton Hoo near Woodbridge. At first, she offered the same money she got from the Ipswich Museum, which was about the minimum agricultural wage, but he said it was not enough. So she increased the offer by 12% to £2 a week (approximately £120 in 2020), which he accepted. His previous employers tried to persuade Brown to work on the Roman villa, which they considered more important. They ignored Brown, who left school at the age of twelve, suggesting that the mound may be Anglo-Saxon, rather than the more common Viking era.

Brown cooperated with some assistants in the manor and slowly dug up a more promising mound. One day, Zhan trench collapsed on him, but he was dug out in time and resurrected. At the same time, he spends more time with the widow Edith and young son Robert, ignoring the daily letters from his wife May. Edith is struggling with health issues, and her doctor warns her to avoid stress.

Brown was surprised to find iron rivets from the ship, which only made it a cemetery for very different people (such as kings). The famous local archaeologist James Reid Moir tried to participate in the excavation but was refused. Edith hired her cousin Rory Lomax to join the project. News of the discovery spread quickly, and Cambridge archaeologist Charles Phillips arrived, declared the site of national importance, and took over the excavation as ordered by the Agency.

As the war drew near, Philips assembled a large team, including Peggy Piggott, who discovered the first unusual Anglo-Saxon artifacts. Brown was kept just to keep the site in order, but Edith intervened and he resumed excavation. Brown discovered Merovingian Tremissis, which is a small gold coin from the late Antiquity period, and Philips declared that the site has important historical significance. Philips wanted to send all the items to the British Museum, but Edith was worried about the war in London and defended her rights. Interrogation confirmed that she was the owner of the ship and its priceless treasure, but she was disappointed due to the continued decline in health.

Peggy was ignored by her husband Stuart and began to fall in love with Rory, but was soon called by the Royal Air Force. Edith decided to donate Suttonhoe’s treasure to the British Museum and asked Brown to recognize his work. She died in 1942.

A note stated that the treasure was hidden in the London Underground during the war and was first displayed nine years after Edith’s death, without mentioning Basil Brown. It was only recently that Brown was fully praised for his contributions, and his name is now permanently displayed with Pretty next to the British Museum.
