On an unspecified night in 1989, a taciturn asthmatic boy, Dylan Jacobs, found his mother, Michelle, crying in front of the kitchen sink, with candlelight nearby. She turned around and the candle blew.
In the fall of the same year, Dylan and his father Michael moved into a new house. In one of the rooms, Dylan found a dusty mirror and an old book containing instructions for summoning the gods and satisfying the wishes of the summoners. The book states that one hour before midnight, the caller must put three drops of blood in the wax of a lit candle and fulfill their wish in front of the mirror. If the summoner has the required willpower, the djinn will fulfill the wish at midnight, but this wish may cost the summoner’s soul. Dylan didn’t tell Michael about the book.
That same evening, Michael left Dylan’s home to serve as the host of the radio station. Dylan took this opportunity to establish a ritual for summoning gods, and he used sign language to hope he could speak normally. Later, Djinn appeared as a cloud of smoke. After a series of strange events, Dylan discovered that Djinn had transformed into a humanoid and was looking for him. After beating the sleepy god, Dylan found that he could not escape the house or contact anyone for help.
Dylan hid in the dungeon, read this book again, and learned that the earth spirits in the human world must obey the laws of physics and appear in the form of dead people, and they can blow out the candles after midnight to expel them.
Since the time was before midnight, he tried and failed to do so. Dylan heard the voice of Michelle asking for help and discovered that Djinn was acting like a terrible version of Michelle. Dylan escaped Djinn’s attempt to capture him. The flashback shows that Michelle committed suicide in the opening scene of the movie. Dylan was unable to ask her for help because of his silence and has been feeling guilty about her death ever since.

At midnight, Djinn faced Dylan. When djinn begged Dylan not to let Michelle’s voice disappear, Dylan was about to blow out the candle. Dylan did not fall because of this, and blew out the candle, successfully dispelling the gods. Dylan later felt guilty about Michelle committing suicide in a dream.
The next morning, the elf reappeared and transferred Michael’s ability to talk to Dylan, which made Michael unable to speak before returning to the book.
Djinn was issued in the United States by IFC Midnight on May 14, 2021.
