Roald Dahl’s film “The Witches” is an upcoming fantasy comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Zemeckis, Guillermo del Toro, and Kenya Barris. It is based on the 1983 Roald Dahl novel of the same name, and is the second full-length adaptation of the novel after the 1990 movie of the same name.
“The Witches” was originally scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures, but was later removed from the release calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was later announced that it will be broadcast on HBO Max in the U.S. on October 22, 2020, and Warner Bros. Pictures will be released in theatrical form on October 28, 2020 in some markets.
The story takes place in Alabama in the 1960s. A lonely little boy stumbled upon a group of witches while staying in a hotel with his grandmother and was turned into rats by the big witch.
Discussions on the new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1983 novel “The Witch” began in December 2008, when Guillermo del Toro expressed his interest in making a stop-motion movie interest of. It wasn’t until June 2018, ten years later, that Robert Zemeckis was hired to direct and write the script, that the potential project was further developed. In addition to playing the script, Del Toro will also co-produce with Zemeckis and Alfonso Cuarón.
Zemeckis thinks it is closer to the original novel than the 1990 adaptation directed by Nicolas Roeg. Kenya Barris co-wrote the film, which was released in Alabama in the 1960s, not the British in the 1980s, and the protagonist of the film (originally a Norwegian in the novel) British children) will be played by Africans-American actors.
The main photography began on May 8, 2019, with locations including Alabama and Warner Bros. Studios in Georgia, Liversden in Hertfordshire, England, and Virginia Water Lake in Surrey, England. It is expected to end on June 25. On June 19, a crew member was stabbed in the neck at the Warner Bros. studio in Leavesden.
