During the production of this film, the plan to make a sequel to Venom began. Harrelson played the short-lived actor who played Cletus Kasady at the end of “Venom” with the goal of making him the villain of the sequel Carnage. Work began in January 2019, and Hardy and Harrelson confirmed that they would return to the writer with Marcel. Serkis was hired as a director in August. Filming took place at Livingstone Studios in England from November 2019 to February 2020, and another filming in San Francisco in February. The title was announced in April 2020.

The main photography work began on November 15, 2019, at the Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England, under the name of Fillmore. Robert Richardson served as the film’s photographer and reuniting with Serkis after working with Breathe (2017). The filming took place on the campus of London South Bank University in mid-January 2020.

Hardy revealed that the shooting in England was completed on February 8, and the production was moved to San Francisco where the film was shot. The location shooting in the city lasted for several weeks, taking place in Tenderloin, North Beach, Nob Hill, and Potrero Hill, and other neighborhoods. In Potrero Hill, Anchor Brewery sent a police station, and Nob Hill’s filming took place at Grace Cathedral from February 20 to 21.

According to reports, Marco Beltrami had previously composed many Marvel-based films produced by Parker, and was hired as the composer for the film in December 2020.
