In 2010, director Kevin Tancharoen released an eight-minute short film called “Mortal Kombat: Rebirth” as a promotional film to Warner Bros. Picture of the relaunch of the “Mortal Kombat” movie franchise. In September 2011, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. announced that they would hire Tancharoen to direct one of the screenwriters of Mortal Kombat: Rebirth Writer Oren Uziel. A new feature-length film aimed at achieving an R rating.

Filming is expected to start in March 2012, with a budget of between $40-50 million, and the release date is 2013.
