“Zombie Apocalypse” (or 2012: “Zombie Apocalypse”) is a 2011 American zombie horror film made by Syfy and The Asylum starring Ving Rhames, Gary Weeks, Johnny Pacar, Robert Blanche, Anya Monzikova, Lesley-Ann Brandt, and Taryn Manning. Directed by Nick Lyon, it was released on the Syfy channel on October 29, 2011. It was released on DVD on December 27, 2011.
The film begins with a flashback from the past six months. In June 2011, a French woman first discovered the plague called VM2. In the next 28 days, 83% of the European population was infected. After the virus finally reached Japan, the Philippines and the United States, it has become a global pandemic. Six months later, the zombie plague wiped out 90% of the American population.
At present, three survivors came down from a hut and searched for food and survivor news in a small town. Reynona (Taryn Manning), Billy (Eddie Steeples), and Kevin (Gerald Webb) are looting an auto repair shop when the noise attracts hordes of zombies to attack. Kevin was swarmed and bitten by another group of survivors including Henry (Ving Rhames), Julian (Johnny Pacar), Cassie (Lesley-Ann Brandt), and Mark (Gary Weeks). Intervened and stopped the zombies. Cassie sends Kevin to bite and turns into a zombie. The group decided to start together. While traveling, Mark revealed that they were heading to Catalina Island, which is said to be a camp for survivors.
The gang stopped at an open-air shopping mall and raided a surf shoe and protective clothing store. They are attacked by a “runner” zombie who attracts a group of slower zombies. Casey killed the runners and they fled the back of the store. That night, they took refuge in a restaurant, and they had dinner together.
The next day, the team went to the “human safety zone” of the high school. Inside, they found the bodies littered everywhere, no one. In the gym, they found an empty crib and realized that the place was abandoned. When they were searching the stadium, they were suddenly filled with zombies pouring in from several doors. In close combat, Ronana is different, Billie is swarmed and bitten. They found Ramona in the shower and introduced Billie to her.
After leaving school, the team took a shortcut in a small community and found a house on fire. When Mack was about to be overtaken by the zombie, the arrow hit it, and a man with a bow grabbed Mack. The man will live with Mike, Julian and Ramona. Henry and Casey are separated, no one else is running. In a nearby safe house, the archer introduced himself to Myrah, Brockton (Robert Blanche) and Sarah (Anah (Anya Monzikova)). They all agreed to decide on the route of the ferry to Catalina. Mike wanted to go back to Henry and Casey, and Brockton told them no.
They decided to follow the original route, hoping that everyone would find each other. The next day, the group set out to cross the city. Julian stopped to use the portable toilet and found a zombie hidden inside. This group of people swarmed, and Julian fell into chaos. They hide among zombies in a van, and Julian exposes his bite to Mark. He actively sacrificed himself to distract, but began to turn before he moved on. The whole team was forced to push him down, and Mack broke his neck.
Meanwhile, Henry and Casey headed to the ferry terminal alone. They decided to stay the same way because they knew where the others were going. They encountered an abandoned army post and dropped some grenades. Cassie killed a group of zombies following them with a grenade, and the explosion was close enough to distract the other zombies in the van. They took the opportunity to leave the van and drove in the opposite direction.
The explosion attracted hordes of zombies to Henry and Cassie, who were eventually trapped on the roof of the building. While on the roof, they saw Mack and others on a nearby roof. Casey and Henry fled the roof and rejoined Mark’s team. The unified group marched along the street towards the pier. On the dock, they found signs about the ferry, isolation instructions, and food and water.
They also found newly killed bodies that had been towed away. The organization was then suddenly attacked by a pair of infected tigers. Brockton was killed and Henry was bitten. Henry begged Cassie to finish him, and she did. At the end of the movie, the survivors were waiting for the ferry, Mike wrote in Julian’s diary. In the final scene, the ferry approaches and blows the horn.
The Asylum released a Blu-ray movie on December 27, 2011.
